Nevada Driver's Training

If you're a teenager applying for your first driver's license with the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), you'll need to gain driving experience while you hold your learner's permit.

Your behind-the-wheel practice will allow you to apply the safe driving techniques you learn in Driver's Ed and help to prepare you for your driving test.

On this page you'll find information about your behind-the-wheel requirements and the next steps towards your first driver's license.

NV Behind-the-Wheel Requirements

If you are younger than 18 years old, you must complete:

  • At least 50 hours of behind-the-wheel practice in addition to a Driver's Ed course.
    OR
  • At least 100 hours of supervised practice, if there is not a classroom Driver's Ed course within 30 miles of your house.

You can begin the driver's licensing process when you are at least 15 years old by enrolling in a Driver's Ed program. For more information, please visit our Driver’s Ed in Nevada page.

You can start your behind-the-wheel practice when you are at least 15 1/2 years old by applying for your instruction permit.

For more information, please visit our Driver’s Permits in Nevada page.

Nevada Driver's Training Course

Driver's education is required if you're younger than 18 years old.

Some courses consist of only 30 hours of classroom instruction, while others include 5 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a driving instructor.

Visit the Nevada DMV website for a complete list of driver training schools and choose a program that meets your needs.

NOTE: You are not required to complete Driver's Ed if there is not a classroom program offered within 30 miles of your house and you do not want to complete an online program. However, you will need to complete additional supervised driving (see “Supervised Driving Practice in NV' below).

Supervised Driving Practice in NV

With your learner's permit, you can ONLY drive when accompanied by a licensed adult who is at least 21 years old and has held a driver's license for at least 1 year.

Before advancing to your driver's license, you'll need to complete:

  • At least 50 hours of behind-the-wheel practice, with at least 10 hours completed at night.
    OR
  • At least 100 hours of behind-the-wheel supervised driving (including at least 10 hours completed at night), if there is no classroom Driver’s Ed within 30 miles of your house and you do not complete an online course.

Your parent/legal guardian will need to sign your driving log, and you'll need to submit it to the NV DMV when applying for your driver's license.
