It's a cloudy morning in San Diego, and my friend, Edwin, drives me right to the entrance of the bookstore, Mysterious Galaxy. Mysterious Galaxy was celebrating its 25th anniversary, so they invited a bunch of authors to come celebrate and sign books. Once I enter the store, I see that about 50 people are already in the store, creating this excited buzz all around. D.J.'s panel didn't start for about half an hour, so I decided to walk around. After a couple minutes of exploring, I find him all alone, looking at some books in the fantasy section.

I walked up to him nervously and greeted him, saying that I was a fan of Pendragon. He was genuinely excited to get to talk to a fan of his books! Maybe it's the fact that I was star stuck the entire time, but I was shocked that he started asking questions about me like my major and what I wanted to do after college. Finally, we started talking about his books specifically, Morpheus Road. Although I only read the first two books, he told me about the mind-blowing connection between Pendragon and Morpheus Road that occurs in the last book. Go read the Morpheus Road Trilogy to find what it is guys!

At about this time, he had to go do his panel with some other authors that were promoting their latest books. The host of the panel asked some 1993 trivia questions and told them to read the 25th page of the book they were promoting. The book D.J. was promoting the 2nd book of The Library series, which seems like a horror series geared towards a younger audience. His trivia question asked for the names of the main characters of his TV show, Are You Afraid of the Dark?. And at the end of that, he announced that the show is getting a movie adaptation in 2019!

After the panel, I got to speak with him some more. He told me a story where a reporter asked him, 'Why did you make the protagonist of Pendragon, a 14-year old boy?' D.J. says that he wanted his target audience to be children about the same age as Bobby, so that as the books get published, readers can be growing up alongside him. The reporter replies, 'Pfft! That'll never work!' Then, D.J. tells me another story of a teacher that approached him at an event, where she says, 'Mr. MacHale, I'm a huge fan!' To that, D.J. replies, 'Oh! Are You Afraid of the Dark?' And the teacher responds, 'No, Pendragon!' D.J. tells me he'd love to track down that reporter and tell him, 'I told you so!' Pretty crazy how much time has passed since Merchant of Death, right?

After that, I got to talk to him some more about the possibility of live-action adaptations of his books. He's actually really close on getting the green light for a movie adaptation of the SYLO trilogy, but he's not sure whether the studio wants to mash all 3 books into 1 movie or not.

And of course, I had to ask about a live-action adaptation for Pendragon. He tells me that he's had a 'million' opportunities to pitch, but they all couldn't fall through. Lots of factors went into these decisions, but he couldn't specify some for me. He did tell me that the sheer size of the series was going to make it difficult to adapt. However, he's always open and trying to get the series into live-action. His plan now is to pitch ONLY Merchant of Death as a single season of 10 episodes and see where it can go from there.

Oh, he also signed my notebook, which I'll share a picture of once I can set up an imgur account. If you've made it this far, thanks for reading! I'll edit in a TL;DR, when I can.
